Calling All New and Not So New Quartets
Has your quartet ever had the “itch” to compete in the regional quartet contest – but you hesitate because you feel you are not quite ready? Do you wish there was a venue where you could get your competition "feet wet" before you entered the real deal in the Spring? Region 19 has the perfect opportunity for you!
Region 19 is bringing back “The Voices” competition at FLASH 2023. In 2014, we re-imagined the original Novice Quartet Contest. We wanted to provide an opportunity for new quartets to compete, but also wanted to provide them with some tools and coaching to help them succeed. Thus, "The Voices" was born!
In a nutshell, a Novice Quartet is defined as a quartet where no more than two members have ever competed in a Regional Quartet Contest. Quartets who fit this requirement can apply to compete with two contestable songs at FLASH on Friday evening, October 6, 2023.
The exciting twist is that each quartet will be paired with at least one member of the Silver Sorority, Region 19's organization of Quartet Champions, who will provide, free of charge, a total of three 2.5 hour coaching sessions, to assist the quartet in preparing for the upcoming “The Voices” competition.
We have had three “The Voices” contests in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The winners of those contests, JewelTones, 2nd Star and Starling 4, respectively, are currently all still together as quartets. Comments from many participating quartets include that the experience and associated coaching were invaluable in their singing and quartet development.

As far as the competition, the winner of the contest is eligible for reimbursement for their Regional Quartet Contest registration, should they choose to compete in the Spring following “The Voices” competition. The other quartets in the contest will receive constructive comments to help them improve as a quartet but will not receive placements or scores. There will be four judges, one in each of the four categories.
